There was that TV show, “Are You Smarter Than a Third Grader”? Not sure how to answer that. Well, I am sure on one thing – I have rarely seen a group of students or adults, for that matter, that are more “Giving Than a Fifth Grader”! Michael Stephens fifth grade class at Powell Valley Elementary, to be exact! With a little bit of encouragement and a huge amount of enthusiasm, this class inspired the entire school and friends and family to accomplish the following:
- Donated 1,407 food items to church food drive
- Donated toys to the needy
- Bought Christmas toys to giving tree families in need
- Raised $125 for Multnomah County Animal Shelter
- Sewed pillows and sold them to raise money for the Friends of Clackamas County Canines
- Prepared 400 snow globes for churches Advent Conspiracy Project at East Gresham Elementary
- Coat drive donated 72 coats to My Father’s House and Portland Transitional School
- Made 13 scarves for the homeless
- Raised $620 for Portland Rescue Mission with a matching donation $620 for My Father’s House
Powell Valley Elementary, teachers, staff and students should be extremely proud of what was accomplished by a caring teacher and some super involved students…this is the world and the education system that makes our community and our country great!! So proud!!
